I’m so excited to share this family session at La Villita in San Antonio, Texas! I love all the Spanish influences in the architecture, decor, and colors in San Antonio. Shooting there has been an absolute dream! However, popular areas can be tricky to shoot in especially for families. I’m sharing more of this session AND tips on how to to have a fun and stress free photoshoot in popular locations.
Tips for shooting in popular/busy locations
I get requests all the time to do sessions in gorgeous locations like national parks, landmarks, viewpoints, etc. While these locations are BEAUTIFUL (that’s why people want photos there lol) they also tend to be very popular and busy locations. The last thing people want is a crowd of people in the background of their photo getting in the way of the beautiful scenery! So here are my tips for shooting in popular/busy locations:
- Plan a sunrise session. I know, getting up at 5am (sometimes earlier!) is not everyone’s cup of tea. However, there’s always less traffic in the morning than in the evening and you still get beautiful light for photos. And trust me, lighting is everything when it comes to taking beautiful photos.
- Plan a weekday session. These busy locations tend to see higher traffic during the weekend so a weekday session also means less people and crowds!
- Avoid holiday weeks/weekends! Trust me, you do not want to do your session on a weekday holiday (such as Memorial Day). Most people have the day off and chances are the location will still be busy.
- Check the location’s official website for events. You don’t want to get stuck planning your session on a Wednesday just to find that there’s a concert or big event going on that day! Make sure to check the location’s official website and calendar to avoid this issue. Planning a morning session also helps, as most events are held in the evening. You may still be able to have your session on one of these dates if it’s in the morning!
Tips for shooting at La Villita San Antonio
The tips above work great for any and all popular locations that see a lot of foot traffic. However, here are my tips specifically for shooting at La Villita:
- Wear shoes that are easy to walk in. The pathways at La Villita are pretty bumpy and not the best for heels. I suggest wearing shoes that are easy to walk in (like wedges) or bringing an extra pair to walk in between photos.
- Arrive about 15 minutes early to find parking. This is a pretty popular location, so you want to make sure you have plenty of time to find parking and make your way over to our meeting spot.
- Wear neutral colors/limited colors! La Villita has lots of beautiful color, and wearing neutrals makes the location stand out even more. If you do opt to wear a color (like the blue this family chose) make sure to pick one color (lighter colors/pastels preferred) and pair it with other neutrals!
